Vague.

Last week, my little cousin, aunt, and I were at Target and my little cousin happened to stumble upon a toy, like always, that he really wanted. It was a Lego City Truck for $34.99. He said, “it’s cheap!” To him, he thought it was cheap because as a 7 year old he doesn’t know the value of money. For my aunt, she thought it was expensive $_$ because she knows the value of money from working two jobs to pay off numerous bills, and other miscellaneous expenses. As for myself, I thought it was in the decent/expensive range because as an employee, I also valued money. I know how hard it is to earn, but unlike my aunt, I wasn’t paying off any bills, but just holding extra money.

This situation qualifies “cheap” as being vague because what really is considered cheap or expensive or decent? A person earning more income can say something is cheap, but a person earning less can say that same thing is expensive.

So what really draws the line of something being cheap or not?

  1. This post was fun to read because it didn't start off like every other post, which explained what vague meant followed by an example. You started off with a story which was a difference for once! I think children specifically are vague due to their lack of understanding about the world as well as a lack of vocabulary. I remember I would always try to persuade my mom into buying me things I wanted by saying "but it's cheap!!" Didn't work out so well though, haha. For your question at the end, I think it's different for everyone, considering income, values, etc. I believe "it's cheap" would also be considered a subjective claim! We learn something new every day ;)

  2. Hey! This was a very fun post to read because it is very relatable! Many of us have been put in situations whether it has been with our friends or family where one person will think an item is cheap and another will think that it's too expensive. I agree with you that "It's cheap" is a very vague sentence because "cheap" in itself is a very vague word. I don't really think their is a true line that draws the line between something being cheap or not because everyone makes different incomes and everyone values money differently. But this is a perfect example of a vague sentence because it is commonly used. I also agree with HolaDora that this could be seen as a subjective claim because what is cheap to you might not be cheap to someone else, what is cheap is a personal opinion.
